  • Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)-Guided Biopsy: This involves using ultrasound imaging to direct a needle through the rectum into the prostate.
  • MRI Fusion Biopsy: This combines MRI and TRUS images to improve the accuracy of the biopsy, especially useful in evaluating suspicious areas identified on an MRI scan.

Advanced Imaging Techniques

In certain cases, advanced imaging techniques might be employed to provide more detailed information on the extent and nature of the cancer:

  • MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging offers detailed images that can help assess the extent of prostate cancer and guide biopsies.
  • Bone Scan: If prostate cancer is suspected to have spread, a bone scan might be used to check for metastatic spread to bones.
  • CT Scan: These are sometimes used to look for cancer spread in the pelvis and surrounding areas.

Interpreting Results

Results from a biopsy and imaging tests provide crucial information about the presence and stage of prostate cancer. Pathologists will grade the cancer using the Gleason score, which helps determine how aggressive the cancer is and to plan treatment accordingly.
